Provides osmo-hydration, addressing the root cause of skin dryness
Osmolytes are small organic molecules that play a crucial role in maintaining cellular osmotic balance, which stabilizes cell volume. They keep the equilibrium of water and solute concentrations inside and outside of cells, ensuring proper cell functioning and preventing damage.
Certain osmolytes, such as amino acids and polyols, experience a decline in concentration with age. This decrease in osmolyte levels may contribute to reduced cellular hydration and compromised osmotic balance. Consequently, the cells’ ability to withstand osmotic stress and maintain adequate hydration may be diminished.

PROTECTS AND FIGHTS AGAINST DRYING-INDUCED CELL SHRINKAGE
Cell shrinkage refers to the process in which cells lose water, resulting in a decrease in size or volume due to excessive dryness or dehydration. This can occur due to environmental factors, low humidity or insufficient moisture retention – whenever the skin lacks proper hydration – and results in compromised skin barrier, increased sensitivity, rough texture and an overall dull and dehydrated appearance.
In formulating our Moisturising Essence, one of our primary focuses was to rehydrate dry skin cells and protect against drying-induced cell shrinkage. We achieved this by incorporating plant-based active ingredients rich in polysaccharides (with water-binding properties), flavonoids and anthocyanins (reducing oxidative damage and maintaining the integrity of skin cells).
They key was also to enhance the skin barrier function by increasing natural lipids to keep the skin cells plump and hydrated; as well as to sooth and reduce inflammation, which may cause redness and discomfort associated with dryness.

ACCELERATES KERATINOCYTE WATER INTAKE
The active ingredients in the Moisturising Essence stimulate the production of organic osmolytes within keratinocytes – the primary cells in the outermost layer of the skin – along with their specific transporter called TauT (taurine transporter). The Essence facilitates the movement of organic osmolytes into the cells, enhancing keratinocytes’ water intake, helping to restore their moisture levels and overall function. This accelerated water absorption and recovery process contribute to improved hydration and health of the skin cells.
Induces the production of lipids, mostly ceramides
Lipids are natural fats present in the skin barrier. They help create a waterproof seal, maintain skin hydration and regulate the entry and exit of substances. Key lipids in the skin barrier include ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids.
Hibiscus sabdariffa fruit extract, one of the hero ingredients of our Moisturising Essence, apar from the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and moisturizing properties, is proven to stimulate the synthesis and production of lipids in the skin. It may increase the activity of enzymes involved in lipid synthesis, such as the enzymes responsible for ceramide production.
